This magazine is typical of the punk genre. It is automatically shown through the suggestions of the dark, dull atmosphere of the colour scheme. The typography used often looks like an old generational font. The iconic artists that are featured on the magazine, such as nine-inch nails and my chemical romance also show the genre.

The masthead is positioned, as it would typically be found on a magazine, the typography used is cracked and this connotes rock and danger as it looks like it has been smashed. This meets the typical connotations of the genre to be aggressive and violent.

The main image is central which meets typical conventions however it is a close up of the male model and this does not meet typical conventions as the normal shot would be a medium shot. However, the close up is used as bait to the reader as he is shown to be significant by taking up the majority of the cover. The model is typically meeting the genre conventions as he is wearing heavy dark make-up, this may also be used to entice the target audience, which appears to be emos, goths and people who enjoy rock.

The direct mode of address is direct to the reader, which is used as bait to hook in the reader and audience. There appears to be a serious look about the model and the use of dramatic make up also gives a more serious look into the eyes of the reader. The connotations of the smoke coming out of the models mouth may bee seen as sexual to the female readers as it shows the rebellious, uprising behavior and nature of the magazine and music genre itself.

There is use of the three-colour rule, they have used black, white and green colours for the typography and a typical dark background the meet the genre. The dull colour connotes darkness, death and danger; this is typical to the genre as it is a typically ‘dark’ type of music. The colours all suit the genre and help add to the atmosphere and attract the target audience.

The cover lines are limited but there is added emphasis due to the thumbnail images, this gives the reader more of a reason to buy the magazine as they use iconic bands and freebees with the bold images and the use of the buzzwords ‘Free posters’. However, it is clear that the main cover line is ‘The amazing resurrection of Ville Valo’ which is obviously the main selling point of the magazine and stands out from the other cover lines.
I will use the idea of one main cover line with other smaller cover lines surrounding my main image, although I like the use of the close up image I will not use this with my magazine, I will stick to magazine conventions and use a medium shot of a model.
