This is the mast head of my front cover, it is the chosen name for my rock magazine.

Conclusion of contents pages

All three contents pages are different and stand out for different reasons, I will use this when creating mine as I want it to be unique. Also the masthead ‘contents’ as with the Katie Perry and Kayne West one stands out and is clear to read, I intend to use this on mine so it looks professional and is obvious what page it is. This is because the top of the pops contents page doesn’t have ‘contents’ on it so it becomes confusing whether it is just another page or is a contents page, it is not a typical contents page as it uses several images and has a loud colour scheme, I will not use this as it looks messy and will not fit the genre of rock. However the other two contents pages look neat and tidy and I intend to use this idea, also they both use only one main image which gives it more meaning and the model suits the genre that the magazine is for, I will use this idea as I can portray the rock genre easier through one main image and a dark colour scheme rather than an over the top busy contents page. The contents of the magazine will be placed typically to the right hand side of the page as this looks professional and tidy and also allows the main image to dominate the page, also here I will use a simple font so that it is easy to read but also fits the genre, colour scheme and looks professional.

Conclusion of double page spreads

All of the examples of double page spreads that I have analysed have a main image on the left hand page, I think this is a good idea as it makes the article more entertaining and entices the audience to the article. Therefore I will use this idea of having a main image of the rock artist covering a full page on the left of the double page spread. This will give me a chance to show off the genre and create a bait to the audience to read about the person, I will use an image with a direct mode of address as this makes it personal to the reader. However due to the nature of the magazine being rock I will use a darker image than the examples I have used.  Also I will use a large quotation like the second double page spread I uploaded as I feel this makes the page more entertaining and also can reflect a main part of the article. Again, I will use a dark colour scheme to allow the genre of rock to show, this will be through the text, image and masthead. I will also include all the extra information that the double page spread needs, for example the page number, website address, and logo of the magazine. 

This is a typical girl magazine, you can tell this straight away by the use of the colours and the use of the iconic boy band, one direction. The masthead stands out well due to the use of the bright colour pink; the typography used is simplistic but girlie. This is a connotation of what to expect inside the magazine.

There is not one main image which is not typical, however there is use of five images and are all immediately connected to the contents, this is shown as the images have numbers on them. The use of the jewelry and purse shows that the magazine is about more than just music; however the use of two pop stars also shows there is a lot based on this. This immediately suggests that this has been done as a marketing strategy to show that the magazine is jam packed with interesting stories.

The colour scheme used is effective; this is as it meets the needs of the target audience. The bright colours used, yellow and pink stand out and make the page seem ‘fun’, the use of the black typography makes the writing easy to read and the fact that some have been highlighted with the yellow colour shows the they are of more importance than the ones that are not highlighted or that do not have and image.

There is a number of typography used, mostly serif fonts as they are informal and ‘fun’, this is in the masthead and the headers of each type of content, this is used to keep the reader interested in the contents and not get bored of looking at it. The san-serif font used are the actual contents and this is so that they can read the information of what is on each page well and makes it look more professional. 

This is an untypical contents page as the main masthead ‘contents’ is separated, however this is common in all ‘vibe’ magazine’s, this is distinctive and will remain something that the magazine is well known for. It is effective as even though it is not ‘normal’ you can still see clearly what it says and it still stands out as the main typography.

The contents page has one main image which dominates the majority of the page, it is an iconic star: Kayne West. This may be used to entice the reader due to his presence. There is an arm around the neck and chest of this star which connotes him as a sexual object as he is being grabbed. Also the flower on his blazer is in colour and is the only image on the page that has colour on; this makes it stand out as a significant prop as it stands out due to the colour contrast. The models direct mode of address is to the reader this is a commonly used effect as it makes the page seem personal to the reader and this is a selling technique. The seriousness of the models facial expression and body language leaves enigma in the mind of the reader as to why he looks serious/upset? He is also dressed very smart, in a shirt and blazer and this keeps up his appearance as he is renowned for his dress sense and style.  

There is a variety of typography used; this makes the font look professional and also unique as it is not boring for the reader to look at. As well, there are sections of different fonts and this makes the contents page look thought out and quite formal to the eye. The contents have been placed well on the right hand side, they are informative and let the reader know where the main pages are and the information that they need. Any added information is underneath this, in the bottom right corner; this is so the reader always has access to this information and also helps the marketing of vibe as well as helping the reader feel more involved.

The basic background works well as the contrast makes the model stand out and also shows the ‘V’ for Vibe stand out and be more evident to the reader. 

This contents page has one main image of an iconic star: Katie Perry. The image of the model herself is central and takes command of the whole page; the mushroom she is holding is almost as big as her and is covering some of the masthead which is effective as it draws your attention to the image itself. The plain background works well with the red colours as they contrast well making them bold and evident. The image has a direct gaze and her facial expression is very shocked, this draws enigma to the model and why she has this expression making it appealing to the audience. The layout of the contents page is very simplistic which makes the image even more striking.

The masthead is black, which makes it bold due to the white contrasting background, this also means that it stands out well; this makes it obvious what it says without drawing the main attention to it. The header is underneath the masthead which makes it easy to see and this added information is key to the magazine, as it gives the issue date of the magazine so the reader knows if they have bought the most up to date one. However part of the image is covering a small part of the masthead,  this makes it more evident as it is clear what is being said even when a small part is blocked out.

The mushroom looks like the outfit Katie Perry is wearing but upside down, also they are of similar sizes, I think this has been done to reflect her music and her attitude of fun. Also the colour scheme used is simple, black white and reds, these all work well together and make sure that the page is not to in your face and looks professional.

The bottom corner next to Katie Perry there is a quote which is from her; this makes the contents page more personal and also interesting to the reader. It may be a direct link to an article that is in the magazine which is being used as bait and to make the reader want to read that specific article. This makes the main focus on Katie Perry due to the image and personalisation of the quote on the front cover.

Photo shoot plan

I will use a male model and take the shots at 3 different locations with different props (Guitar and CD), and also with a change of costume.
The shots i will take are:

• Close up
• Medium close up
• Medium shot
• long shot

The model will be wearing dark clothes such as black jeans and a dark shirt or a large jacket/coat to reflect the rock genre.

The model will have a direct mode of address as this is typical of magazine images and i will try and use up to 3 different backgrounds.

This will take place on the weekend of the 15th and 16th of November. On the 15th I will take shots during the day so I have some lighter shots and on the 16th I will take the images at roughly 5pm so I can get a dark atmosphere of the night.

Rock and roll magazine mock up

This is the mock up for my rock and roll magazine, i have included three different fonts, this is as i was experimenting what fonts may suit the genre. From this i have decided i will not use any of the fonts included, however i will use the idea of three different fonts.The masthead and sell line will have the same font as these are the key points of the magazine cover and if they are the same fonts it will highlight its significance to the reader.

The main image will follow normal conventions of being central, and large, covering the majority of the page. I plan to have one model who will have the connotations of rock and roll i.e. dark make up and wacky hair. This will be the main attraction of the front cover and be the main bait to the reader.

I will include the normal conventions of the bar code, price, date of the magazine and website of the magazine company. These details are needed and are key in the selling and marketing of the magazine cover. It is also important as it makes the buying of the magazine easier for the customer and the added information of the website makes it more personal as they can feel 'connected' to the up to date news and stories.

I will use a logo as this is needed to promote my magazine company and make sure it is well know. Underneath the logo i will have 3 cover lines and 3 plugs, these will help give added information as to what is inside the magazine itself. Making it seem more appealing and enticing the reader to buy the magazine to enjoy more stories inside.  

This mood board shows a variety of music magazine contents pages, the main occurring theme is rock as this is the genre I have chosen to do however there are other genres included such as indie and pop to show a wider range of ideas that I could also include in my own.

As you can see, all types of contents pages are unique, none are exactly the same. This gives me a chance to use different ideas and experiment with the use of different ideas for my own. For example I quite like the fun layout of the pop magazines however I do not like the brightness and ‘in your face’ colours that have been used. Also, for the rock magazines there is a simplistic layout which I feel is appealing so I will try and use this idea for my own contents page as it makes it look professional and not give too much away, as this is what the front cover is for.

Most of the contents pages include a main image followed by a supporting thumbnail picture, this idea is good as it hooks in the audience and is more appealing to look at rather than just a list of content. Further, the contents page that does not follow this is the middle, bottom image of the female this is due to their only being one image used. This is due to the outrageousness of the image and the fact that it is a large shot which covers the whole page and another thumbnail image would ruin the impact that this image gives.

The font on all contents pages is easy to read, this is because this is the ‘guide’ to the whole magazine, the lists of contents is always smaller than the masthead that indicates ‘what’s inside’, this is because it gives more information but the masthead is more interesting and needs to hook the reader in so that they continue to look at the page. 

The main image dominates the double page spread, the image is a non-typical close up shot and it stands out very well within the layout. This effect has been used to catch the eye of the reader, as it is the main focus upon looking at the double page spread. The image shows the emotion in the models face, which appears to be sadden, the direct mode of address adds to the effect of this as it feels personal towards the reader.

The use of font has taken up half the left hand side page, this quotation has been used as a header, to reveal more about the article and the image (the actor), the use of colour separates the words and causes enigma as to the order of the wording. This has been used (black and grey) to contrast with the white back ground and stand out well, also the use of typography being different sizes causes a sense of enigma and makes it more interesting to read. The colours are also similar to the colours on the face of the model as his hair is black and his beard is greyish.

The article is written professionally and looks very neat in the 4 columns. Also the logo of the magazine appears in the corner of the double page spread this makes it familiar as it appears on every page and the reader will remember the logo, it is also placed next to the page number which makes it professional as this added information is much needed.  

This double page spread is dominated by the main image on the left page; it covers the whole of the left page and is in a dark, black and white effect. This has an effect as the bold, red ‘L’ stands out more so as there is no other colours included which gives a hint of the rock and roll genre. Lady Gaga, the iconic main image, is only wearing a necklace; this idea could fit in with the idea of her being vulnerable or promiscuous. The image has a direct mode of address to the reader to connect with them and hook them in; this makes the image more dramatic. Her unusual wild hair connotes her weirdness and shows that she is not a typical female musician. She has been used so that people such as her fans are more likely to buy the magazine, also to show that the 'weirdest' of people can be 'beautiful', which gives females hope.

The right page is the main body text; it is set out like a newspaper article, in three columns, which looks tidy and professional. However the most dominating feature on the left page is the large, bright red ‘L’. Although at first glance, the ‘L’ looks as if it is above the writing it is actually set back, this may have been done, as the L is the beginning of the artist’s name. It could also be done to draw more attraction to this article whilst going through the magazine. The colour scheme is very simple but effective, as they use black, white and red constantly which looks professional and also counteracts with the genre. This works well as it is light on the readers eye and  makes the red doubly stand out with more significance, this is good as it has more emphasis on the double page and does not make the article look as boring.

There is no headline or straplines; this may suggest there is more to the story than just these two pages, making the reader look more into the magazine. In the bottom right corner is the feature of the page number, issue number and number. This gives the added information that a reader needs, there is also the website included in the bottom masthead to the left, this gives intertextuality of the webpage, and allows the reader to find out more information or look at the websites offers. This is a good idea as people can constantly have the information on hand and makes the magazine's professionalism continuous. 

After my research I have come to the conclusion that the distributor I would like to use would be Future Publishing Ltd.

This is because my choice of magazine is rock and this distributor is prominent in the publishing and distributing of magazines including rock.

Future is a well known media company which focus on selling a number of magazines here are some: ‘Official Xbox Magazine Rhythm SFX T3 Total Film Total Guitar Triathlon Plus Windows: The Official Magazine Your Family Tree’ this was taken from Wikipedia.

This means my magazine would fit in with the institution, as the company publishes a number of rock magazines already, this also means they will know how to distribute and sell the magazine well. This consists with the likes of metal hammer and total guitar, due to the company being well known my magazine will immediately be put in good hands and will have a high chance of large selling rates, they also use convergence such as TV and radio, which means my magazine may be promoted further than I expect.

My magazine would be complimentary to future, due to them not currently selling a rock-based magazine weekly, this means it will add to their portfolio as well as help my product in promotion. It also means that Future will be able to compete with their competition such as Bauer who produce Kerrang! weekly, which is a top selling rock magazine. I also feel like my magazine will do better with Future than the likes of IPC or Bauer as these companies already have iconic rock magazines which means there is more likely to be a place for my magazine at Future.
